How to import a used car to Ireland
When you've chosen your perfect used car, shipping it back to Ireland is easy. Here's a simple guide to show you how:
- Provide proof of ownership for which our friendly team will give you the Vehicle Registration Document
- Visit the Vehicle Registration Office in Ireland to get your vehicle inspected
- Complete the Vehicle Registration Tax 4 form
- Pay the Vehicle Registration Tax within one working day of your return to Ireland
As soon as your vehicle has been registered by the Revenue Commissioners, you'll receive a receipt for your Vehicle Registration Tax and the new registration number assigned to your vehicle. You can pick up your new registration plate from any reputable motor dealer and you're required to display this within three days.
Before you drive on Irish roads, you must pay your Motor Tax. You'll need an RF 100 form to do this and the Revenue Commissioners will send this to you. Simply complete the form and hand it in at the Road Tax Office. You'll be given your new Irish Registration Certificate after you have paid your Motor Tax.
What if your new vehicle is over four years old?
If your imported vehicle is over four years old you'll need to complete your National Car Testing. You must do this as soon as you receive your Registration Certificate. All you need to do is:
- Visit your nearest National Car Testing Centre with your Vehicle Registration Certificate and have your vehicle added to the NCT database.
- Contact the National Test Centre just one day later and book a test.
