Used MG TF

If you’ve always fancied a Lotus Elise, but couldn’t quite afford one, there’s still hope. A used MG TF from The Car Shop Megastore uses exactly the same engines – mounted in the middle just like its more glamorous sibling – and costs an awful lot less. The best examples are the 115bhp 1.6, the 135bhp 1.8 and the 160bhp 1.8 VVC with variable valve timing.

On the road a used MG TF handles well, the redesigned suspension giving sharper cornering and improved grip compared to the old MGF, although the smoothness of the ride suffers. Some may feel the electrically assisted steering still lacks directness and the high driving position detracts from the sports car feel.

In the cabin space is fair, and the high seating position offers good visibility although taller drivers may find themselves brushing the ceiling. Drivers may also find themselves short of room for their clutch foot. Luggage space is fair for a small two-seater and there’s plenty of provision for odds and ends.

A used MG TF isn't bad value compared to its rivals, but isn’t as generously equipped. Remotely operated mirrors, central locking and electric windows are standard on all but the basic 115. Air conditioning is an expensive option.

Used MG ZR

If the long heritage of the MG badge appeals, but you need something more practical, a used MG ZR from The Car Shop Megastore could be just what you’re looking for. The extensive range includes a 103bhp or 117bhp 1.4-litre and a 160bhp 1.8-litre, plus two turbodiesels delivering either 101bhp or 113bhp.

A used MG ZR lives up to its sporting pedigree with a fast, fun drive. The steering is direct and responsive and the ride agile and predictable thanks to stiffer springs than the old Rover 25 it was based on. The result is enjoyable if a little unrefined.

For a car that is clearly intended for serious drivers, a used MG ZR doesn’t have the most accommodating driving position. Adjustment is limited and the dated dash design makes some controls awkward to use. Passengers in the back don't get much legroom, but the boot is fairly generous, even if the opening is rather narrow for larger items.

The specification on standard models is quite basic, so it’s worth looking out for the ‘+’ trim.

Used MG ZS

A used MG ZS from The Car Shop Megastore is one of the most successful Rover upgrades. There are five models to choose from: a 108 bhp 1.6 (ZS 110), 117bhp 1.8 (ZS 120), a muscular 177bhp 2.5 V6 badged ZS 180 and two turbodiesels offering either 101bhp or 113bhp. The ZS is available in either four-door saloon or five-door hatchback styles.

Given that it’s based on an old Rover 45, which was spongy at best, a used MG ZS is surprisingly good fun. The stiffened, lowered springs make it easy to drive hard with bags of grip and composure even at high speeds. The ride doesn’t suffer too greatly either, with only the occasional bump intruding on the cabin.

Climb aboard a used MG ZS and you’ll be very comfortable – in the front. The large front seats are comfortable and offer lots of side support, but severely encroach on the legroom in the rear. Overall the interior feels a little old fashioned and you may miss your modern refinements. All models feature a split/folding rear seat to allow extra luggage capacity.

Whichever model you choose, a used MG ZS has a reasonable specification. Even the entry-level ZS110 has alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes and remote central locking, plus twin front and side airbags in the event of a crash.

Used MG ZT

A used MG ZT is the flagship of the MG Rover range. Come to The Car Shop Megastore and you can choose from a 120bhp 1.8 or 158bhp 1.8 turbo petrol engine plus a 114bhp or 129bhp CDT turbodiesel. Keen drivers will be more interested in the V6 190 with 187bhp. All are available in either the standard four-door saloon or ZT-T estate versions.

For such a big car, a used MG ZT is a surprisingly satisfying experience on the road, with tidy cornering, strong roadholding and pleasing refinement. The steering requires some muscle at parking speeds but otherwise the car feels confident and co-operative.

Inside a used MG ZT there’s plenty of space for those travelling up front. If you’re in the back you could find yourself wishing for more legroom if the people in front stretch out. Boot space is fairly generous – though not as much as you might expect in a car this size. The estate offers a decent-sized boot and plenty of space with the split rear seats folded, but it's far from the most spacious estate of this size.

The standard car is well appointed with air-conditioning, electric front windows, remote central locking and a CD player. Pay a little extra for the ‘+’ trim and you’ll also benefit from climate control a CD multichanger and electric rear windows.
