Used Smart Fortwo

With its distinctive compact design, for many a used Smart Fortwo from The Car Shop Megastore is probably the definition of a stylish city car. There's only one 999cc petrol engine, but you can choose from three versions offering 61, 71 or 84bhp. Unless you expect to be travelling long distances, the 71bhp model offers the best balance of performance and economy.

A used Smart Fortwo's tiny size makes it ideal for weaving in and out of city traffic but the ride can be wearing. The hard springs needed to stop this tall, thin car tottering around corners means that rough surfaces are transmitted directly to the passengers. The front wheels soon run out of grip as well, although the standard stability control helps out in the wet.

The interior is stylish and well laid out, with big user-friendly controls. Top models also offer colourful matching trim throughout. The driving position won't be ideal for everyone due to the lack of adjustment, but there's still plenty of room for two six-footers. Boot space isn't great but is still better than some city cars.

A basic used Smart Fortwo is quite mean with the standard equipment, but go for the top models and you can expect a CD player, panoramic glass roof, electric windows and air conditioning.

Used Smart Forfour

Stylish and distinctive, a used Smart Forfour from The Car Shop Megastore offers a refreshing change from run-of-the-mill superminis. A used Smart Forfour is easily the best Smart to drive, with brisk, accurate steering and lots of grip. However, the firm springs that make it so much fun to drive do mean that the ride suffers and rough urban streets can prove tiring. You can choose from a manual or a rather jerky semi-automatic gearbox.

Once you get inside, a used Smart Forfour starts to look a bit more conventional with well laid-out controls, although it keeps the pod-style dials from its smaller sibling. There's plenty of room too - the sliding rear seats that allow you to choose between boot space and rear legroom is a clever touch.

Equipment levels are reasonable on all models, with antilock brakes, airbags, electronic stability control and electric front windows as standard. Higher spec models add alloy wheels, air-conditioning and satellite navigation.

Used Smart Roadster

Enjoy open-top motoring for less with a used Smart Roadster from The Car Shop Megastore. This compact cabriolet comes with a 698cc turbocharged unit producing 80bhp as standard - but the low body rate makes it a lot more energetic than it sounds. Opt for the sportier 101bhp Brabus version and you'll achieve 0-60mph in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 119mph.

The taut, well-balanced handling makes a used Smart Roadster a joy to drive, with tons of grip and positive, precise steering. Unlike its short wheel base siblings the roadster doesn't lose its composure on rough roads and, even though the ride is firm, it won't break your back over the occasional pothole.

The Roadster is not a big car, but even so the low seating position means the cabin has enough room for a couple of six footers. The controls are attractively set out and easy to use, but cabin storage space is limited. Luggage space is fair, with 59 litres in front and a further 86 litres in the back (45 litres if the roof is down). That's enough room for a couple of overnight bags or a modest shopping trip.

Choose a used Smart Roadster and you won't be short of extras either, with twin airbags, a CD player, electric windows and stability control all as standard.
