DVLA Clamping Down On Unaware Motorists

DVLA Clamping Down On Unaware Motorists

Are you fully aware of the new tax regulations? Many motorists are said to be purchasing used cars unaware that the old tax documentation being automatically cancelled once the vehicle has been changed over. Since the paperless tax system was introduced last year, figures have revealed that that the number of cars having to be clamped due to this has soared. Even if the existing paper disc is months from expiry motorists still have to apply for a new digital one.

There seems to be a battle commencing between the DVLA and unsure motorists, with many having confirmed that the DVLA has been operating a 'money-making scam' providing them with no warning about their car not being taxed. The authorities are said to be rather quick to point the finger and reprimand motorists without any form of reminders, which has unfortunately led to drivers being faced with bills of up to £800 just to get their impounded vehicles back.

Numbers show that the DVLA’s use of clamping rocketed by 60 per cent, from about 5,000 vehicles a month before the changes to 8,630 last month, leaving drivers with no alternative but to pay, due to no way of appealing. The clamping has been dubbed as being “heavy-handed and Draconian”, with the DVLA working a so called “shady practice” and it all being a money-making scam. Others have communicated that the rule changes were not very well publicised, as it is clear to see that these motorists who are getting clamped have not received the correct information.

The DVLA have deemed such comments as “preposterous” expressing that the rule changes were broadly publicised, with the agency writing to every vehicle keeper to remind them of the new rules before the vehicle tax expires. Defending claims of not giving motorists any notice of a non-taxed vehicle, the DVLA have said making any driver aware of their non-taxed car was done fairly by providing a warning letter to remind them to tax as they are in jeopardy of an enforcement action.
