News: Making noise for local areas

CarShop is extremely proud to support Global’s Make Some Noise as the official national charity under the CarShop Cares Programme. Since September 2016 CarShop has been on a mission to try and raise £100,000 for Global’s Make Some Noise before the end of 2017 and has so far contributed over £30,000. With lots planned throughout 2017, CarShop is confident the target is achievable.

This tremendous charity was developed to support small but brilliant charities, helping disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. By uniting some of the best-loved radio stations in the UK – Heart, Capital, Capital XTRA, Classic FM, Smooth, LBC, Radio X and Gold - to provide small charities with a voice, fundraising support and also by providing vital training of key skills such as marketing, it builds foundations to generate ongoing success.

Each year small charities bid for funding support from Global’s Make Some Noise and, if approved, will benefit from all fundraising efforts from Global’s Make Some Noise and key partners, such as CarShop.

Today marks the unveiling of what the local charities actually received from Global’s Make Some Noise.

The first charity to mention is KidsAid, who positively impact the lives of children & young people in Northampton by providing specialist therapy in a number of different ways such as play therapy, art therapy & drama therapy. These crucial practices help kids recover from traumatic events; instances such as family breakdowns, abuse or neglect.

Being based in the heart of Northamptonshire, KidsAid is supported by our Northampton store. In becoming a beneficiary of GMSN, KidsAid sought funding in the region of £26,316; however, they were visibly overwhelmed when that number was almost tripled to a grand total of £66,500.

This huge funding will not only enable the charity to deliver a further 2 years of therapy but also allows them to further their reach to the outer areas of Northamptonshire & provide over 1800 hours of vital care to the children in the area.

The second charity supported (local to CarShop Doncaster) is The Candlelighters Trust. This Yorkshire charity does tremendous work by supporting brave families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer; their support extends far & wide as they run a support centre where families can receive both emotional & financial help.

As part of their pitch to GMSN, The Candlighters Trust set a funding target of £23,947; however, due to fantastic efforts of everyone involved, they were given an unbelievable £82,400 (wow!) which not only allows the charity to employ a Project Support Worker for 2 years but also allows for the creation of an animated film project which will help kids diagnosed with cancer better understand their treatment.

The third charity we helped raise money for was The Hamlet charity, based in Norfolk & supported by our Norwich store. This long-standing charity has done some great work in the Norwich area since their creation in 1972, by supporting families with disability needs and helping them overcome the barriers they face.

Global’s Make Some Noise inspired The Hamlet to apply with the aim of securing £30,000, to help them fund a new Lead Practitioner role in order to provide life-changing support. What they didn’t realise is that we would be giving them an extra £15,500 which would enable them to bring in more soft play equipment to help the charity care for even more families.

Our Swindon store facilitated by the GMSN & the CarShop Cares programme, supports the Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group, this tremendous charity has been supporting people with Down’s & their families for 10 years, by holding support events like family fun days to help parents and their children network and share their experiences together.

Due to the great work of the Global’s MSN programme, the charity was able to set a goal of £29,000 in funding, however, as a result of the great efforts of everyone involved, the fee given to them was bumped up to a huge £41,300. This will allow Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group to fund Speech & Learning therapy for 2 years instead of one, as well as contributing towards special sessions to teach youngsters life-saving skills to cope with emergencies, and a drama therapy group in order to boost the confidence of the patients.

In Leighton Buzzard- where the CarShop preparation centre operates from, The Pepper Foundation selected as the local beneficiary by Global’s Make Some Noise. The Hospice at Home children’s nursing team & their very own ‘Pepper Nurses’, tend to more than 50 children at any one time to provide specialist care and support for the patients & their families.

This terrific charity was able to set an ambitious target of £50,000 which would help fund another Pepper Nurse to lessen the workload for a year. We think the picture below sums up their reaction when they were told they would be getting a huge £86,000 instead, which enables them to fund the Pepper Nurse for a further year & continue the vital support that is needed for the patients.

Last but not least, our Cardiff store helps support the Y Bont charity; this Bridgend-based charity offers unique services that aim to provide care for & support for disabled children and their families in that area. Y Bont were looking for around £32,710 which, again, would allow them to fund another Nurse for 1 year; however, Global’s MSN programme decided to extend that to 2 years by increasing the final amount given to £57,000. Not only does this help the Nurses but it also allows the charity to employ a new Nursey Nurse as well as specialist equipment to help the children communicate.

CarShop has worked closely with both Global’s Make Some Noise and with the local charity beneficiaries, in order to educate CarShop colleagues throughout the UK about the CarShop Cares programme and the great work the local charities do. As a result, colleagues from the used car retailer were honoured to attend a couple of the cheque handover ceremonies.
