Blog: CarShop's viral victory

A recent social post on our Facebook page has catapulted visibility of a great cause worldwide, reaching over a hundred million people.

In today’s digitally-focused society, a well-designed and executed social strategy is essential in raising brand awareness, optimising conversion and facilitating interaction with a brand. But, it should also be designed in a way to harness the power of social platforms to raise awareness of truly-inspiring content, and to champion, acknowledge, educate and influence social responsibility efforts of others - individuals and companies.

Last Friday CarShop felt it appropriate to share an inspirational story of a Canadian police officer who has been working with the North Face Rally to raise funds for a young man with cancer, after an interaction which was caught on camera by US Media Company – Vice. CarShop’s decision to share this was based on the fact it had strong synergy with CarShop’s own CarShop Cares charity programme; a programme which supports Global’s Make Some Noise, a charity designed to support and change the lives of children and young people throughout the UK.

Since being shared by CarShop, the post has reached nearly fifty million users across the globe, had over 43 million video views and over 785,000 reactions, comments and shares. And, as a result of this, Officer David McNab – the police officer featured in the video – contacted CarShop to thank the retailer for helping build awareness of the incredible cause. He even sent across a video to reflect his thoughts, and gave praise to the work of the CarShop Cares programme in supporting young people across the UK through their partnership with Global’s Make Some Noise.

In relation to the success of the post, David McNab stated:

"This has created a lot of positive ripples over here in Canada & I really appreciate the positive spin that has come from the video. The fact that CarShop started this has been a very good thing."

Leo Nelson, CarShop’s IT and Marketing Director, commented:

“The response to the post has been phenomenal! And it really does demonstrate the awesome power of social media. We fully commend the work done by David and are delighted that we could help raise awareness of his tremendous cause.

“As a business we’re very passionate about charity work, using the CarShop social media channels to shout about our own efforts. Charity and community aspects feature strongly in our social strategy, and that’s because we firmly believe in engaging followers with wider, community-based initiatives. At the end of the day, we know that we’re a used car retailer and that we do that very well. But, rather than viewing social media as just another route to support our core business, we feel we have a duty to inform, educate and influence our community about important causes through content.”
