Blog: Find the perfect car with a little help from CarShop

When it comes to car-buying, there’s a pinch of stress, a bit of confusion and perhaps a headache or two; but hopefully with this handy guide, and our straightforward sales process, you’ll be able to enjoy the experience – think of it like a spa day for the brain. After all, getting a new car is an exciting process, and you should love every minute!

Be sure of what you want

Firstly, you need to be pretty honest with yourself about what you want from the car. If you’re looking for a motor that will:

  • Ferry the kids to and from school every day
  • then slug to work
  • plus, you’re looking to pinch the pennies a bit

then realistically, (as much as it might hurt to say) the last thing you want is an Aston Martin.

Don’t buy out of habit

You may have had a Ford as your last three cars because they were the best motors for you on the market at the time.

But the world of the car is forever changing, and your lifestyle is always changing too! You don’t want to kick yourself in a month’s time because you made the wrong choice after not doing the research. As much as you might love one brand, there may be something different that will suit your lifestyle better.

You wouldn’t want to miss out on the drives of a lifetime because you didn’t do a little more investigating.

So, let’s try and help you narrow it down!

Want lower running costs?

These will probably be your tax-free and low road tax motors; they tend (always double check) to have better fuel consumption too. So look for smaller hatchbacks, a few SUVs and definitely the hybrids, especially if you’re looking for something a little meatier.

Covering lots of miles?

You’ll more than likely want a bit of room, a luxurious interior and a decent engine under the bonnet if you’re going to be spending a lot of time on the road. Check out the gorgeous saloons and the chunkier hatchbacks as well as the Estates. You might want to see if they have good fuel economy – we know that your wallet would definitely appreciate it!

CarShop’s featured: Vauxhall Insignia

CarShop suggests:

Vauxhall Insignia, Seat Leon, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C Class, Volkswagen Passat, Mercedes E Class

In need of a family wagon?

If you’ve got a bigger family, then it might be worth looking at the seven seaters. If not, then make sure that you get yourself a spacious hatchback or SUV with a big boot!

At the end of the day, you know you’ll be doing the weekly shop, the school run, the football game pick-up, the friends drop off and who knows what else. So, look for a durable car, one that won’t cost a fortune to run (so you can spend your hard-earned pennies on something more luxurious) and has plenty of room in the back to help with in-car squabbling.

CarShop’s featured: Citroen C4 Picasso

CarShop suggests:

Nissan Juke, Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, Peugeot 5008, Peugeot 2008, Ford Kuga, Nissan Qashqai+2, Renault Grand Scenic, Vauxhall Mokka, Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Grand C-Max, Mazda CX-5

How about a bit of fun?

You’re probably looking for a bit of bite under the bonnet and great handling. This can be your high-class saloons, gorgeous coupes and don’t forget about the fun little hatchbacks too!

CarShop’s featured: BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

CarShop suggests:

Abarth 595, Volkswagen Golf GTD, Audi A8 saloon, Mazda MX-5, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, BMW M135, Volkswagen Scirocco R

Need a smaller motor that will do for the school run?

Your five door hatchbacks are your best bet here! If you’re looking to splash out a bit further, try and get a car with a few extras to help with parking and that’ll mean you won’t be fearful of the multi-story either. But if you’re looking to pinch the pennies too, then there’s plenty of funky hatchbacks with great running costs, so keep looking at the road tax and fuel consumption.

CarShop’s featured: Vauxhall Astra

CarShop suggests:

Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus, Kia Ceed, Mini Countryman, Audi A3, Mazda 3, MG MG3, Volkswagen Golf, Mercedes A Class, BMW 1 Series, Skoda Yeti

Looking for your first car?

We’ve already got a blog to help you out!

Something a bit more luxurious and stylish?

Grab yourself a saloon, possibly a gorgeous 4x4, perhaps a great name, and make sure there are fabulous features to make every drive amazing like heated leather seats, DAB radio, a DVD player and Bluetooth that will still turn heads wherever you go!

CarShop’s featured: Jaguar XF

CarShop suggests:

Jaguar XF, Range Rover Evoque, Audi A8, Lexus CT, BMW 7 Series, Audi Q5

Going for an off-road adventure?

If you’re looking for something practical for the mid-week errands, that is also great for the weekend; the Land Rover and Range Rovers are the British go-to here. But don’t forget that other manufacturers like Fiat now do a 4x4 and brand like Jeep, Audi and others has got a lot to offer too!

CarShop’s featured: Land Rover Freelander

CarShop suggests:

Audi A4 All-Road, Land Rover Discovery, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Fiat 500X, Volkswagen Tiguan, Land Rover Evoque

Want a safer motor to drive?

SUVs are leading the motoring market when it comes to being safe on the road. But, sometimes you get the odd hatchback and saloon with fitted extras like lane-control, overtaking sensors and more, so don’t rule them out completely. When you undergo your search, be sure to check the fitted extras that came with the car when new. (All you have to do is scroll down a bit on the CarShop site and it’s all listed for you there!)

CarShop’s featured: Nissan Qashqai

CarShop suggests (these cars all have the NCap 5* rating):

Volvo V40, Volvo XC60, BMW X1, Nissan X-trail

Going to be driving around town?

Perhaps you would suit a smaller hatchback, something that is kitted out with parking sensors or maybe a parking camera? And if you’re using it for the everyday adventures you might want to think about whether you would need a decent sized boot too.

CarShop suggests: Mini hatchback, Fiat 500, Vauxhall Corsa, Audi A1, Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, Renault Megane, Volkswagen Polo, Citroen DS3, Nissan Note, Peugeot 208

And don’t forget the most important thing -

You have to love the car you’re going to use every day!

Give it a test drive, make sure you love the styling and make sure it’s comfortable for your day to day life-style.

It might be worth picking a few things here that are important to you. You’ll get a much better idea of what car would tick all the boxes and would suit you and everything that goes on in your world!

Sometimes it helps to make do but with so many cars out there, it’s definitely worth taking time with your choice. Dare to be a bit picky, and if you still need a little help, why not go online and book an appointment with one of our consultants get a little help around the showroom?
