Blog: Happy birthday Volvo: Celebrating everything Volvo with CarShop

First things first, happy birthday Volvo!

Volvo is like that reliable friend that is always there and never want to be in the spotlight, and here at CarShop we think that should start changing right now.

With background appearances in movies such as Good Morning Vietnam (1987), Rush Hour 3 (2007) and The Hangover III (2013), Volvo has always been just out of the limelight. So, we’re following in the footsteps of the Twilight Saga (2008-2012) and celebrating Volvo for the great car manufacturer that it is!

Where it began

In Latin, Volvo means “to roll,” and they got their journey rolling in Sweden with the first car - the ÖV4, which left the Lundby factory on April 14th 1927 and was in production for just 2 years.

Which makes Volvo the grand old age of 91 – and still going strong may we add.

The best part about the first Volvo? They nicknamed it Jakob – how awesome is that!

The classics

Before the boxy persona, Volvo really did manufacture some beautiful cars through the years.

The PV444 was a great example of engineering charm – we’ll tell you now that the names of them were never as beautiful as the car itself, so don’t get your hopes up for something more imaginative! It was released in 1946 and was produced right through to 1958.

The gorgeous little motor below is the P130 Amazon 2-D.

Just FYI, we can assure you that this car is definitely 3D and was in production from September 1961 for 9 years before stopping in 1970.

Now we get to the “box” years. Volvo changed in style to become the household name for the safe and practical family motor, and this 240 represents that perfectly. This distinctive Volvo was released in 1983 and was manufactured for 10 years!

In fact, they are so safe and have such superb quality that even a caravan wouldn’t stand a chance:

And today…

Volvo have branched out to manufacture lorries – four wheels obviously wasn’t enough!

(And who can forget that advert with Jean Claude-Van-Damme)

Although Volvo are trying to shift slightly from being known JUST for their safety, it’s still a massive part of their brand...

The V40 originally came out in 1995, but has been updated to a much sleeker and more modern version with all these elements that make Volvo great:

Volvo V40

With a 5* NCAP safety rating, this hatchback is perfectly practical with its big boot and loads of leg room. It’s also small enough to manage the everyday errands without you worrying too much.

Moving on to its bigger brothers which are all ideal motors for the family:

Volvo V60

This V60 is the bigger version of the V40 and is great if you’re after a little more room.

Volvo XC60

Keeping with the times, the XC60 is the SUV for every occasion. It’s got a 5* NCAP safety rating, and you can get models with four-wheel drive, ones that are surprisingly affordable to tax and some that are kitted out with oodles of extras for a luxurious journey.

Make sure you have a proper look around our website for the perfect one for you!

Volvo XC90

This chunky model is great if you’re looking for a super spacious SUV with a 5* NCAP safety rating for your peace of mind too.

And the future?

And now they are branching out into electric cars with their ‘all electric’ motor due to be released in 2019.

So, despite being 91, Volvo is still keeping up with the youngsters in the car market!

**Please be aware that the exact cars that are shown may not be available now, but there are plenty others to choose from.
