Whether you’re fitting the car seats in or folding the rear ones down to fit the bikes in, we know a family car needs to be as versatile as your day to day errands.
And what better time to explore the perfect family car for you than on International Families Day.
But, first things first, let’s get some of the terminology down so you can keep reading:
ISOFIX is an international safety standard which makes the process of fitting a car seat, safer, easier and a doddle. Instead of using the seat belt to fit the car seat, you anchor on to the ISOFIX points and drive without a worry.
The Euro New Car Assessment Programme gives an overall safety rating based on the 4 areas they test – Adult Occupant (these are the front seats), Child Occupant (the back seats), Vulnerable Road Users (the people outside the car and Safety Assist (the bits and bobs fitted to help you avoid crashes.) SUV’s are a family favourite nowadays. They have a taller drive height, have loads of room in the back and are a great combination of something a little quicker with all the practicality you need.
It’s worth noting that there is 7 seater version of the Qashqai – just keep an eye out for the +2 on the end. But, if you’re just after the original, then you still have plenty of room in the back and the boot, as well as a 5* NCAP safety rating for your peace of mind. And you’ll even be able to have two car seats in the back fitted with ISOFIX points.
This chunky SUV also has a 5* NCAP safety rating, so you know your family is in good hands, its tall driving position is a plus with loads of road users, and it has a big boot as well as ISOFIX points as standard too.
Volvo’s are known for their safety, and the XC60 is no exception. With high marks across the board on the NCAP tests resulting in a 5* rating, you’ll be able to cruise in confidence with the kids in the back in this car. Oh, and you’ll also have ISOFIX points as standard.
A few more contenders…
The BMW X5 is great for fun and practicality with over 200bhp under the bonnet in most models, some even getting over 300bhp and still have a spacious boot. Plus, there’s ISOFIX points as standard too!
Surprisingly spacious and has a 5* safety rating, the Peugeot 3008 is like a hatchback with a little more room for the kids and the luggage. It’s got 3 ISOFIX points as standard too - one in the front and 2 in the back.
We all know that a family doesn’t stop at 3 kids, and we all need a little extra room if we’re going for a long road trip – and that’s where the 7 seaters shine! You may think that you won’t be able to get the car you really want as you’ll need a few extra seats, but once you start looking, you’ll be amazed at the variety. Here’s a few that we’ve featured:
The 2010 version of the Grand C-Max has a staggering 5* Euro NCAP safety rating, so you can rest assured that your family is in good hands with those! But, be aware, they re-designed the Grand C-Max in 2017 and this latest model has only got 3*.
This spacious family wagon scored a wholesome 5* on the Euro NCAP safety rating.
Not only does this chunky Ford have an astro-nomical amount of space, it’s also got a 5* NCAP rating, 3 ISOFIX points on the second row, and the back seats can fit 3 separate car seats side by side comfortably.
And a few more contenders…
The Citroen Grand C4 Picasso has 3 full size second row seats which means you can get 3 individual child seats in the back - and they all have their own individual ISOFIX points! Make sure you look for the word “Grand” though, as the original Picasso is just a 5-seater.
The Volkswagen Touran is a gentle giant. You can easily pick one up for under £10k and you’ll still be able to fit 2 child seats in the back. Plus, with 5 ISOFIX mounting points, they’re there to stay!
The Audi Q7 , has ISOFIX points on all 6 passenger seats, and you get a little luxury and oodles of extras with this German manufacturer.
The Land Rover Discovery SUV, is a luxurious family motor that has a 5* NCAP rating as well as 5 ISOFIX mounting points on the rear seats!
These cars are perfect if you’re looking for something a bit more professional but can still handle the school run and has loads of room for a bit of extra luggage.
With ISOFIX points as standard and sophisticated styling, this car is ideal for the commute as well as the weekly shop. And, with its 5* NCAP safety rating, you know your family will be in good hands.
This gorgeous saloon has clearly marked ISOFIX points in the back, which saves you a job in itself, and most of these models come with great spec and oodles of extras - as well as a 5* NCAP rating!
If you’re looking to save a few pennies in running costs without compromising on space of style, then the Insignia will tick all your boxes. It’s got a 5* NCAP rating to keep you cruising in confidence, and it is one of just 2 estates that have 3 ISOFIX points in the back… (the other is a Peugeot 308 estate.)
And a few more contenders…
With cheap running costs and loads of room in the boot for luggage, the Skoda Octavia can take on everything that life throws at you. It’s also got a 5* NCAP safety rating for extra reassurance.
If you’re looking for a fun, slightly smaller car that can handle the town as well as the open road, then your best bet will be with the hatchbacks. There’s loads on the market to choose from, so make sure you do your research! The best part is, hatchbacks are usually a little cheaper, so you can get more spec for your money.
This surprisingly spacious hatchback is great for the everyday errands with its big boot, and since it’s such a diverse car, there’s plenty to choose from on the market such as diesel and petrol, affordable road tax and extras like DAB radio, SatNav and even heated seats too. Oh, and it’s got a 5* safety rating!
With reasonable running costs, a 5* NCAP safety rating, a great price tag and more room that you would think, you get a lot of car in a Kia. This motor also has ISOFIX points as standard, and with loads of different specs on the market, make sure you shop around for your perfect mix of extras.
A small family car with a 5* safety rating, ISOFIX points as standard and is a great all-rounder, easy to handle and is a perfectly practical motor too.
A few more contenders…
The 2014 Renault Megane scored 4* in the NCAP safety tests, but not happy with that, Seat went above and beyond with its new 2015 model to get the 5*.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Tesla Model S has 3 ISOFIX points in the back –that’s what we call a fun and practical compromise!
