The IAM has come up with some tips on how to drive safely this winter.
The weather is getting decidedly colder and so it is that frost and ice are beginning to appear on the roads. With this in mind, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has come up with some tips for drivers on how to safely navigate their vehicles during the winter.
According to the charity's chief examiner Peter Rodger, the following suggestions should be considered initial pointers to get you thinking about how to drive safely over the next few months.
"Being mentally prepared as well as having the right equipment is vital, so think about any problems you encountered last winter, and what you need to do to avoid them or overcome them if they recur this year," he said.
The IAM suggests, for one, to endeavour to stick to main roads because it is highly likely that they will have been salted, making driving much safer. Also be careful navigating at night, as this is when the temperature drops markedly.
Without exception, always have a de-icer and scraper in your vehicle at all times. This might sound rather obvious, but Mr Rodger notes how many people forget to do so time after time, hence the reminder.
If, when you are starting your journey, you notice that the roads are slippy, attempt to leave in second gear. Release the clutch, accelerate slowly and avoid high revs.
Increase the usual stopping distance by as much as ten times when the conditions outside are severe and the roads are exceptionally icy, says the IAM. This is because your brakes are less effective at stopping – it is safer to slow down gradually.
In the event you find that you've lost control and are starting to slide sideways, take your foot off the accelerator and then point your front wheels in the direction you would like to go.
