Young drivers are 'overconfident'

A survey by the IAM shows that a high portion of young drivers believe that their road skills are better than average.

A high portion of young drivers seem to hold the belief that their skills are higher than that of the average road user.

This is according to a survey of young drivers across the UK from the Institute for Advanced Motoring (IAM). It showed that 75 per cent of young males who had recently earned their licence thought they were better than the average driver, while this belief was also held by 68 per cent of young females in the same situation.

Statistics for where the UK's most confident young driver seemed to vary according to location. Young people from Northern Ireland appeared to be the most confident as 87 per cent said they were above average, while Welsh young drivers appeared to be the least confident as 56 per cent rated their skills as highly.

Yet the IAM raised the concern that official figures suggest the opposite is true of young drivers, as they are considered to be 2.5 times more likely to be involved in a driving accident.

IAM believes that part of the reason for this confidence, although it does not fit with figures, is down to the fact that not enough has been done to improve safety among young drivers.

Chief executive of IAM Simon Best said: “Our whole system of learning to drive must be overhauled to provide safe exposure to a wider range of traffic situations, but also the chance to discuss attitudes and risks.  New drivers feel invulnerable and it is the job of government, training providers, insurers, charities and parents and carers to ensure they have the best training to reduce risk to themselves and others.”

Insurance quotes tend to be far higher among young drivers due to the fact that they are more likely to be involved in an accident.

When shopping around for their first car, young drivers should pay close attention to the insurance groups of vehicles that they look at as this will determine roughly how much their cover will cost.
