Most popular estates
Estate cars are great for families and commuters that need a car that can tackle everything.
Estates are cars which have a big area behind the seats and are sometimes known as station wagons across the pond. So, if you need a little extra space for the family and the dog, something that’s good on the road and looks good in the office carpark, then an estate car could be your perfect solution.
We’ve got estates from all over the spectrum in this list, proving that what is most popular isn’t always the same type of car. So why not take a look through and discover some of the most popular estates on the used market?
Volkswagen Passat estate
The Passat not only looks great, it comes in a range of different models so you can get the perfect car for your lifestyle. Don’t believe us? Well it was the most popular estate sold at CarShop in 2018 – so a lot of people must love it.
The Alltrack model has 4 wheel drive if you need it, and you can choose between both petrol and diesel engines too. More recently, a hybrid model has hit the used market – the GTE – which you can now pick up at a reasonable price if you’re eco-conscious.
It’s probably no surprise to hear that the Golf estate – the Passat’s slightly smaller sibling – was in the top 10 estates sold at CarShop in 2018 too. Although, if you check out the figures, when it comes to boot capacity with the back seats up, the Golf is actually 2 litres roomier than the Passat which sits at 603 litres!
BMW 3 Series estate
With BMW you know you are getting great build quality, the highest standard of German engineering, and usually plenty of extras too. It takes pride of place for being the 2nd most sold estate at CarShop in 2018!
Compared to the Passat, you get less boot room at 495 litres with the seats up, but you may find better performance, and some models on the used market are even just £30 to tax for the entire year.
You can choose between petrol and diesel engines, with a surprisingly large selection of diesel options, you’ll be able to find the perfect one for your commute.
It’s worth mentioning that its bigger brother, the 5 Series, has a more powerful engine, but still reigns as one of the most popular estates on the market today. Plus it has 560 litres of boot capacity with the seats up, so has a little more room if you need it too.
Ford Focus estate
If you’re watching the pennies but still want a popular, reliable and stylish estate car, you may want to take a look at the Ford Focus estate. It was actually the 3rdmost sold estate model at CarShop in 2018.
The biggest thing the Ford Focus has to brag about in this list is the price – you get a lot for your money! What’s more, on the used market you can find the older generation models which can cost £0 in road tax, so it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled, plus, most of the range can boast great fuel economy too.
It’s a little more compact than some of the other estates on this list with a boot capacity of 476 litres in the older models (some newer variants have 575 litres) with the seats up, but it’s still roomy enough for plenty of luggage, and actually has the added benefit of being easier to manoeuvre around the town.
Vauxhall Insignia estate
The Vauxhall Insignia is another estate which is a little more budget friendly, and it came in as the 4th most sold estate car at CarShop in 2018.
You get a range of engine sizes for both diesel and engine models. If you want a bit of bite under the bonnet for motorway commutes, look at the 2.0 diesel for something a little punchier. The 1.6 diesel is better for the longer commutes or go for the petrol if you don’t do as many miles. Plus, if you keep an eye out, you may find some models which are just £20 to tax for the entire year!
With 560 litres of capacity in the boot with the seats up, and a surprising amount of tech if you get the right trim, you’ll find great value for money with the Vauxhall Insignia estate.
Vauxhall Astra estate
Another one for Vauxhall in the top 10, the Vauxhall Astra estate was the 5th most popular estate sold at CarShop in 2018.
With a boot capacity of 540 litres with the seats up, you can get plenty in the back, and you can find models with great mpg, with many of them reaching over 70mpg! Plus, if you keep an eye out on the used market, you may be able to find the perfect car with just £20 to tax for the entire year too.
Oh, and you can’t forget about the features! The Astra estate is surprisingly well equipped, and you can find used models for under £10,000 with the likes of cruise control, Bluetooth and DAB radio.
Audi A4 Avant
With the A4 Avant, there’s plenty of options to choose from, so you can find your perfect estate. You can choose the Allroad model if you want 4 wheel drive, and with a range of diesel and petrol engines from 2.0L to 3.0L you can decide on bhp too!
As the 6thmost sold estate at CarShop in 2018, the A4 Avant is the only Audi to make it into the list. But, it’s worth mentioning that the A6 Avant is still a fantastic estate and makes for a great commuter.
With 505L of boot capacity when the seats are up, you’ve got plenty of room in the back, even though it’s not the most spacious estate on the list. But if you want the Audi with a little bit extra, then maybe you should know that the A6’s seats up capacity increases to 565L.
Skoda Octavia estate
The Skoda Octavia estate was the 7th most sold estate at CarShop in 2018. With a 610L capacity boot with the seats up, it’s one of the roomiest estates on this list, so if you’re looking for space then check the Octavia out!
You can find models that will suit your budget as well. You can find these estates for great prices on the used market, and a lot of them will have nifty features like DAB radio and even cruise control. Plus, keep an eye out and you may find some models that are even £0 to tax for the entire year.
The Octavia’s bigger brother, the Superb is also a highly popular estate. It has a slightly bigger boot at 660L, and it is really a critic’s favourite!
Mercedes C Class estate
If you were after a touch more luxury in you estate, then the C Class is the option to go for on this list!
You have a range to choose from with the C Class estate, you have the options of petrol, diesel and a good amount of hybrids on the used market too. So, if you wanted to take the leap into a greener way of travelling, the C Class estate is a great place to start.
With a 490L boot capacity, the C Class doesn’t have the most space in the back, but it makes up for it with great tech, a comfortable interior and added style.
Ford Mondeo estate
The traditional family hatchback has grown up and added more space in the Ford Mondeo estate.
This high-quality estate tends to be well equipped on the used market, so you can find the likes of Bluetooth and parking sensors on models which won’t break the bank. Plus, you can find models that cost £0 to tax for the entire year, and many more which are able to get over 70mpg, so you won’t be worrying about the running costs either.
The Mondeo has a decent 541L boot capacity with the seats up, so you won’t have any problem getting the luggage in whilst you cruise in style on the commute.
The Volvo V60 is one we have chosen as a wildcard. Despite not coming in the top 10 of estates sold at CarShop in 2018, it has been widely regarded as one of the best estates on the market.
With one of the biggest boot capacities – 557L with the seats up – the Volvo is great in terms of practicality. You tend to find that a lot of models on the used market come well equipped with tech too, so if you keep an eye out you’ll be able to find the one that is perfect for your lifestyle.
