Most popular MPVs
MPVs (or multi-purpose vehicles) are larger cars which tend to hold more than your standard number of passengers. There are a few exceptions to that rule, but in essence, you get a lot of room, and they are the perfect cars for families and busy lifestyles.
The MPVs in this list topped the most sold MPVs at CarShop in 2018, and are top of the lists of many MPV blogs too. Take a look at see what you think.
Citroen Grand C4 Picasso / Citroen C4 Picasso
At the top of the list is the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso! This was the most popular MPV which was sold at CarShop in 2018.
This chunky family run-around has 7 seats, so it’s great for bigger families, and with the back seats down, it has a spectacularly roomy boot at 2,181 litres. But, bear in mind, if you need to use all of the seats then the boot capacity decreases to 165 litres.
And if you’re worried about the pennies then it’s time to breathe a sigh of relief. With the Grand C4 Picasso, you can regularly find models that can achieve over 60mpg, and some older models are even just £20 to tax for the entire year!
Plus, depending on the trim, newer Citroens tend to be very well equipped, so you’ll be able to enjoy an assisted and entertaining journey from A-B.
Citroen really seem to have this MPV thing sorted, as the smaller version – the C4 Picasso – was the 9th most popular MPV sold at CarShop in 2018. It has most of the same features as the Grand C4 Picasso, but is a little smaller to help you get around town, and has 5 seats rather than 7.
The Vauxhall Zafira was the second most sold MPV at CarShop in 2018!
So what made it so high up the list? For one thing, it has 7 seats, so you’ve got plenty of room for extra passengers, and it’s a little smaller than the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, so it’s a little friendlier for town-driving.
The other big bonus is that it’s not just affordable to run with some models able to achieve over 60mpg, it’s also very affordable to buy. Most MPVs have a higher price tag, but the Zafira keeps this a little lower for families that are watching the pennies.
But don’t think that you’ll have to compromise on the extras! On the used market, you can find a range of trims with features to suit you – some of them are under £10,000 and come equipped with the likes of Sat Nav, Bluetooth and parking sensors!
At number 3 of the most popular MPVs at CarShop in 2018 is the Ford S-Max!
If you’re after a little more elegance but need an MPV, then the S-Max ticks all the boxes. And if you check out the ST line trim, then you’ll be able to enjoy sportier styling to keep the kids looking cool on the school run too!
Along with a little more luxury, you also get a wide range of amazing features too. It’s not hard to find models on the used market with the likes of Sat Nav, cruise control and even heated seats.
You get 7 seats, and the S-Max is actually one of the roomiest MPVs on our list. With a whopping 700 litres of boot space with the seats up, you can easily get the weekly shop in the back without lowering any of the seats. But when they are down, you have a 2,020 litre capacity to play with.
The S-Max isn’t the only Ford to look out for on this list. It turns out Fords are pretty popular across the board for MPVs – so keep on reading to find out what else made the cut!
Ford Grand C-Max
The Grand C-Max was the 4th most popular MPV sold at CarShop in 2018.
It’s the second roomiest Ford on this list, so you still get lots of space, and with its quirky sliding doors, it couldn’t be easier to load up the back seats with the kids as well as the luggage. In fact, the boot capacity is a whopping 448 litres with the seats up, and when you pop them down this increases to 1,715 litres!
Its smaller counterpart – the C-Max – didn’t come far behind either. As the 6th most popular MPV sold at CarShop in 2018, you can get all the elements of the Grand C-Max except with 5 seats, “normal” doors and only a slightly smaller boot too.
If you’re in need of an MPV but want a little more prestige and sophistication, then the Volkswagen Touran might be the MPV for you.
It came in at 7th place of the most sold MPVs at CarShop, and for good reason!
You can enjoy an abundance of tech throughout the range of trims, and find the likes of Sat Nav, cruise control and parking sensors pretty commonly on the used market.
A lot of the Touran models also get more than 60mpg on average, so you needn’t worry about spending too many pennies at the pumps, and you may even find that some pre-2017 models are only £30 to tax for the entire year. Not to mention that you get the peace of mind that comes with the VW badge.
Keep in mind that it does have one of the smallest boot capacities on the list, but if you need something for work and for the school run then it will tick all the boxes.
The B-Max is the midway point of the Grand C-Max and the C-Max. You get the added versatility of funky sliding doors, and a more compact frame to handle the town a little easier too.
It is slightly smaller than the C-Max as it is based on the Fiesta rather than the Focus, and has 5 seats rather than 7, but it does have a surprisingly roomy boot! With 318 litres of capacity with the seats up and 1,386 litres with the seats down, it rivals even some of the biggest MPVs.
Again, as it is a Ford, you get a load of tech for your money, so you can find plenty of models with great extras on the used market like parking sensors and Bluetooth.
Ford has really conquered the list of the popular MPV. In at number 10, the Galaxy is the 5th Ford to be in our top 10 most popular MPVs sold at CarShop.
This is one of the roomiest MPVs we have on the list, with a massive 700 litre capacity with the seats up and a whopping 2,339 litres with the seats down. So, you’ve got room from everything from the weekly shop to the weekend away as well as the dog – oh, and did we mention it has 7 seats too? So there’s room for more passengers too.
And of course, since it is a Ford, you should find an ample amount of features to get your teeth stuck in to as well.
