We know that when it comes to family life, your car needs to be able to cope with whatever gets thrown at it. So if you’re starting your family, have a few nippers on the school run or are the teenage taxi, you need a car that’s as flexible as you.
We’ve put together a list of some of the best and most popular family cars out there on the used market, so you can pick the best motor for your lifestyle.
The Volkswagen Golf has already been crowned as one of the best motorway cars thanks to impressive MPG across the range – with some getting 70 and over, 380 litres of boot space (and over 600 litres on the estate models) and £0 tax on some too! On top of that, it’s also a fantastic family car.
You can find models to get your heart racing in the GT series, an estate version if you need a little extra room and you have a choice of diesel, hybrid and petrol engines too. So there’s plenty to choose from.
Its compact design – especially on the hatchback - makes slipping into tight parking spots at the supermarket a breeze, and inside, you’ll be surprised how spacious it is! So, the kids will have plenty of room in the back – and adults in the front have a comfy school run and commute.
Plus, you can find great models equipped with great features on the used market such as stop-start, Bluetooth and loads more to keep you entertained and safe on the move.
The Ford Focus has been a family favourite for years!
Not only does it look good on the outside, inside it’s durable and comfortable, and many models on the used market are packed with loads of futuristic tech for a great journey.
Did we mention that they are very practical too? With the seats up you can enjoy 575 litres of space on some models, so there’s plenty of room for the weekly shop. Plus, many Focus’ on the used market are kitted out with the essentials like Sat Nav and parking sensors!
If you’re after economy, then you can find models on the used market with efficient engines that can be £0 to tax and get over 80mpg too (and many others get over 60mpg!) So you can tackle the commute and the school run and without having to visit the pumps.
The Vauxhall Insignia is a sophisticated hatchback that is great for the family as well as the daily commute.
You can find models on the used market which are £0 to tax for the entire year (check out the models which were registered before 2017) and you can regularly find models which achieve over 70mpg.
You get plenty of room in the boot too with around 530 litres (depending on model) with the seats up, which is perfect for the extra luggage, the weekly shop and even the dog too!
The newer models on the used market are packed with extras like Sat Nav and cruise control to take the ache out of long drives, and give you a little more comfort when you’re dealing with every day family life.
Although the Astra is better known as a hatchback, the estate version makes a great family car too – and you get the added benefit of a little more room in the back.
With petrol and diesel options to choose from, you can find the perfect Astra which will fit in with your lifestyle. If you’re after economy, then check out the ecoFLEX models which can be £0 to tax for the year and achieve over 80mpg!
You’ll regularly find models on the used market with the likes of Sat Nav and parking sensors, so whether you’re tackling the school car park or the weekend away, the Astra has you covered.
The Mondeo was another car that we listed in our motorway favourites, which just proves how versatile this car is! It’s still going strong despite first produced way back in 1993.
But it has definitely kept up with the times! Some models are £0 to tax for the entire year, and many can achieve over 70mpg, so you needn’t worry about the pennies at the pumps.
For example, the 2016 2.0 TDCi 180 Titanium diesel model will get you 62.8 MPG on average and will only cost you £30 a year in road tax! The Mondeo recently received another face lift, so its fuel efficiency, low road tax and super spacious interiors come in an even more stylish package – making it a great car to both ferry the kids around and drive in style with just the adults.
Handy features also make this car perfect for families, with a sizeable 541 litres of boot space (depending on your model) with the seats up and the whole family aboard, and good infotainment to keep everyone happy.
If you’ve got a big family, the Passat is a great choice for you! It’s a larger family car – so it’s great for those teenage years – but it’s not big enough to make the big shop or lifts to and from friend’s houses a nightmare.
The added bonus with the Passat is not just the space, it’s the gorgeous design too – you’ll definitely arrive in style! It’s also well equipped, as you’d expect with a Volkswagen, so you can frequently find models with Sat Nav, cruise control and parking sensors to give you a helping hand during every part of your journey.
You can choose your perfect Passat from petrol, diesel and hybrid versions, so you can find the perfect partner for your everyday family life. Many of the hybrid models can achieve over 160mpg! But don’t worry, the petrol and diesel versions are very impressive too with over 70mpg.
The clue is in the name – this Skoda is a superb all-round family car!
You can get hatchback and estate models depending on your lifestyle, but both of them are really roomy. The hatchback, depending on model, may have 625 litres with the seats up and a pretty incredible 1,760 litres with the seats down. Whereas the estate has around 660 litres with the seats up and an incredible 1,950 litres with the seats down.
If you’re after great fuel economy, you can find models on the used market which are just £0, £20, or £30 to tax for the entire year, and many of them can achieve over 70mpg. So you can tackle the everyday errands without spending too much time at the pumps.
But if you were looking for a little more excitement with all the practicality that the Superb has to offer, then keep an eye out for the 2.0L TSI 280 engine which has a massive 280bhp under the bonnet.
Another family car with a seriously sporty edge is the 508 – making it a perfect choice for car fanatics with kids in the back! It has bags of style and will turn heads in the school car park, but is practical and comfortable enough to make the everyday adventures fun.
Inside, you get a lot of leg and head room, and you’ll find plenty of tech like cruise control, Bluetooth and parking sensors in its well thought out interior to make every drive easy.
You can regularly find 508s on the used market which can achieve over 70mpg if you’re all about efficiency, and if you find a model that was registered before 2017 – it may even be free to tax!
Plus, with 473 litres in the boot with the seats up, there’s plenty of room for everyone’s luggage too.
