As well as being ideal for childminders and large families, 7 seater cars are very versatile, offering more boot space and just being more spacious in general compared to family hatchbacks. Although many manufacturers are favouring SUVs and van-based people carriers, the traditional 7 seater cars can still be a great buy and you may get more than you bargained for. Here are our top picks available from CarShop…

Vauxhall Zafira

If you’re after a 7 seater car that doesn’t break the bank, the classic Vauxhall Zafira is the answer. Now in its third generation, also known as the Zafira Tourer, it’s certainly a step-up in both style and features from its predecessors. Most models can be found with, at least, cruise control, Bluetooth and electric windows all round.

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso

The Citroen Grand C4 Picasso is rated highly by Euro NCAP, being one of the safest family cars around. It is of a rare breed in that the centre seats are able to be moved independently and also all have ISOFIX. The Grand C4 Picasso certainly has its quirks and is great value for money with the equipment it offers. Higher spec models can even be found with an electrically operated footrest for the front passenger seat and aircraft-style fold-down tables for the middle passengers.

Fiat 500L MPW

The largest of the 500 family, the 500L MPW is highly versatile and can a high spec model can easily be picked up for less than £10,000, featuring automatic lights, cruise control, climate control and fold-down tables for the centre row. The centre seats are on runners, so can provide more leg room for any adults sat in the back, and has significantly more boot space, with the rear seats down, than the 5 seater model, the 500L. The diesel engines found in these are highly efficient, capable of up to 67 mpg combined.

Renault Grand Scenic

As you would expect from Renault cars, the Grand Scenic has plenty of tech for the money you pay. The most popular model, the Dynamique TomTom, comes with navigation provided by, as you may have guessed, TomTom. On top of that, you will find Bluetooth connectivity, automatic lights & wipers, keyless entry & ignition and cruise control/speed limiter. Like the aforementioned Citroen Grand C4 Picasson, the Grand Scenic has middle-row seats that move independently and all come with ISOFIX. They also have an impressive boot size, even with the rear seats up.

Ford Grand C-Max

What separates the Grand C-Max to the other 7-seaters in this list is its sliding rear doors, which make loading the kids into their seats a doddle in tight car park spaces. The Grand C-Max comes with a variety of engines, from the award-winning 1.0 litre Ecoboost, to the torquey 2.0 litre diesel engine. Some models can even be found with the same engine that’s in the Fiesta ST, the 182bhp 1.6 Ecoboost, if you’re looking for the best of both worlds. Newer models have the latest version of Ford’s SYNC infotainment system that feature sat-nav and, in some cases, iPhone/Android connectivity.
