Smaller crossover SUVs are getting more common on the used car market, and are becoming ever increasingly popular.

Since they are based on smaller hatchbacks, they tend to be just as easy to drive, and some of them can even be just as economical! Plus, you get the added benefit of a more spacious cabin and higher ride height.

Nissan Juke

The Nissan Juke is one of the best-selling crossovers. It is not only quirky, it is also well-equipped with alloy wheels and LED indicators as standard, and the features only get better the further up the trims you go!

As well as most equipment you would expect to find in modern cars, like SatNav, Bluetooth and cruise control, the Juke has a unique Dynamic Control System which can both switch the drive-mode selector (e.g sport) at the push of a button, as well as take care of the climate control!

The Nissan also comes with a wide range of engines. If you’re after economy, go for the 1.5 litre diesel engine. But if you want a bit of bite under the bonnet, go for the turbocharged 1.6 litre petrol engine which can produce a massive 215bhp! Some models can even have 4 wheel drive – so keep an eye out.

Vauxhall Mokka

The Mokka is Vauxhall’s answer to the small SUV. It has a more rugged look when you compare it to the Juke, but also has 4 wheel drive models to choose from.

In terms of value for money, the Mokka does well since most models come with cruise control, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity (depending on the trim.)

Diesel models in particular are very economical. The 1.6 CDTi engine is capable of nearly 70mpg!

Renault Captur

If you’re looking for a funky town runaround then the Renault Captur will be top of your list.

The stylish Renault if efficient too. Its 1.5 dCi 90 engine will get a massive 78.5mpg, and it is fast becoming the choice for families with its spacious interior.

It is also well equipped; you can often find models on the used market with SatNav, cruise control and even parking sensors.

Mini Countryman

The Mini Countryman was launched in 2010 and is the first subcompact crossover that Mini have released.

The Countryman is the biggest on the Mini range and it can offer a great drive, great quirky looks and loads of room in the back and the boot.

If you want a 4 wheel drive model, look out for ALL4, and if you wanted a slightly smaller model in the version of a 3-door coupe, then check out the Paceman.

Peugeot 2008

The 2008 is Peugeot’s breakthrough into the SUV market and is their answer for consumers keen to get a car with style, efficiency and practicality.

The 2008 has a lot in common with 208 hatchback. There are plenty of features even in the entry-level Active trim, such as cruise control and speed limiter, Bluetooth and DAB radio!

The next trim up, Allure, takes it up a notch with automatic headlights and wipers along with dual climate control.

Citroen C4 Cactus

The quirky Citroen C4 Cactus certainly stands out from the crowd and is great for budget hunters, especially as you’ll find great features like SatNav and cruise control on a wide range of models.

One very distinctive feature is the air-bumps on the sides (although they have started to disappear on the newer models), which help to stop those nasty car park dents.

The 1.6 BlueHDi diesel engine is great for the miles and your money, as it is capable of up to 80mpg combined, so is ideal for the motorway commuter!
