Summer is coming and that means perfect weather for a picnic! There are plenty of cooler bags to store your goodies in on the market, but did you know you can get cooler bags and boxes that can be powered by the 12V socket in your car to keep your food cooler for longer? We tested three very different products and our verdict is as follows. Note that, to get the best out of these cool bags, we recommend using ice packs as you would with conventional cool bags.

Mobicool S28 DC Thermoelectric Cool Bag

This compact cool bag, with a two way ventilation system, can keep food cool down to 15⁰C below the ambient temperature and has a capacity of 28l. It has a detachable 12V cable and folds flat for easy storage and is very lightweight. Ideal for couples and small families, but there are larger bags available. The downside of this bag is its triangular shape, which can compromise its maximum capacity.

Koolatron Soft Bag Cooler - 34 Can (12V)

Straight out of the box we were already impressed with the size and how lightweight this coolbag was. What impressed us even more was its ability to either keep food warm or cool depending on which way you plug in the 12V cable (marked on the plug). Plenty of pockets to keep your consumables and other useful items and also two drink holders that are insulated. Although not as compact as the Mobicool, this coolbag is ideal for campers and festival goers.

Sealey CBOX2212V 22L 12V Cool Box

We became all nostalgic when we unboxed this cool box. Despite how large it seems, its capacity is 6 litres less than the Mobicool. On the plus side, there’s no risk of your sandwiches getting squashed and makes a handy seat due to its rigidness. The 12V cable tucks in neatly under a flap in the lid.
